The work of
the Christian Community Service Center started with Emergency Services providing
a food pantry for Houston residents. This outreach program strives to help low
income clients in southwest and central Houston who are in crisis situations.
Emergency Services offers assistance with basic needs such as food, clothing,
medical assistance, and rental /utility assistance. Often called “the heart
and soul of CCSC,” Emergency Services is a special place where volunteers
come together to work hand-in-hand, helping others in the community.Bilingual volunteers
are always needed to adequately serve Spanish-speaking clients.
The program is staffed Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and
every Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 Noon at 3434 Branard Street. Emergency Services
served over 22,000 people in 2009!
Programs and Services
- Food Pantry
The food pantry provides a five-day supply of food for people experiencing
hunger or food insecurity. Clients receive food items necessary for well-balanced
meal preparation. In addition to the regular food package, clients may also
receive fresh fruit and produce, grown in our community garden. Special needs
are met for clients who are homeless.
- Clothing
Clients select their own clothing items after an interview with a volunteer.
Nearly all items are donated, and children’s underwear and blankets
are purchased when funds are available.
- Financial Assistance
Limited financial assistance is available for help with rent, utility payments,
and medical needs (medications, eyeglasses, etc). Clients must meet all appropriate
guidelines.
- Referral System
Resource books are maintained to ensure that clients are referred to other
agencies for long-term assistance and needs such as child care resources,
discount furniture, and elder care.
